Perfect Soft-Boiled Eggs

How To Make Soft-Boiled Eggs

4 perfectly soft boied eggs cut diagoanlly in half.

Most people have eaten soft-boiled eggs either by themselves or included in another meal. The creamy silky yolk pairs with many different foods by enhancing the flavor and texture of the dish. There are many soft-boiled egg recipes out there so to keep things simple, let’s start with the eggs.

Eggs: White or Brown

Eggs are an inexpensive source of protein and they are readily available at most stores. There are many different types of eggs such as organic, free-range, and simple store-brand eggs but the main difference between eggs is their color. The color of the egg depends on the color of the hen and the diet that was provided to them. In this recipe, I use brown eggs. I have had a preference for brown eggs since growing up I mainly ate brown eggs. However, there is no difference in taste or cook time between white or brown eggs and they are interchangeable for any recipe.

Fresh Equals Delicious

The easiest way to make the perfect soft-boiled egg is by using fresh eggs. The fresher the egg, the easier it is to peel and the better it will taste. Ideally, you would purchase your eggs at a farmer’s market to guarantee freshness, however, not everyone has one nearby. These days with busy schedules it is much easier to run up to the nearest convenience or grocery store. When I go to the supermarket I try to look for the quality of the eggs. I make sure there are no added hormones or antibiotics and the expiration date. The best way to tell if an egg is fresh is to look at the expiration date.

Water Test

A quick test to check the freshness of the egg is to place it in a bowl of water to see if the egg floats or sinks to the bottom. If it sinks to the bottom it is fresh and if it floats to the bottom it is not as fresh. Also, you can tell if an egg has gone bad by the smell and the consistency when cracked. The USDA considers eggs to be safe to eat up to 45 days after processing.
